Your Bio

We started this site to celebrate our first daughter, Marley, and her dad's unbelievable good fortune in having two of the most beautiful and photogenic women on earth share a kitchen with him every morning.

Now there's a new sheriff in town and we've balanced the gender scales in the house (throw in the dog and the boys have a 60% majority - enough to squash an female filibusters I might add). Teague McCabe has joined his big sis' and together they're quite the terrific twosome.

Teague Jasper McCabe : Teague was born at 9:15pm on Monday, the 23rd of Feb, 2009. He was 7lbs 13 oz & 20.5 inches. He's apparently a Pisces - which sounds like sort of sissy sign based on Wikipedia - but not to fret, he was also born in the year of the Ox so I think we're talking sensitive yet mercenary: he'll buy you a drink but if you cross him he's going to steal your woman. That's just how it is. The name is Welch and rhymes with "league" (as in major leagues). His last name is Scottish and his heritage is mixed European with a relatively small contribution from the British Isles despite the name (provided my assumptions about his paternity are correct. Just kidding, we had him tested to be sure [not actually true, mom]). What else can I tell you? The man loves to poo and eat and sleep; he doesn't have much use for the extra belly button cord the pediatricians left him so he's letting that go because he's tough, decisive and not afraid; he's got big hands; he's seems to be more into the Red Sox than Patriots right now but it may just be the season. I should also mention big sis is into him big time - though throw in a 2 year old's attention span and we have requests for "I wanna hold baby Teague" and "all done holding the baby" playing on loop 12 hours a day.

Halloween 2009 : Halloween involved multiple stages: first there was a community party the week before, Marley was a yellow princess. Then the big day came, Marley was a Snow White Princess. Teague started as a duck but ended up as a rooster by vote and size constraints. A savvy admirer will note some similarities in Teague's current costumes and costumes seen on this website in previous years. The princess outfits were a generous hand-me-down gift from a nurse Liana works with. Marley at 2 yrs 9 mos. Teague at almost 9 mos.

NE Vacation 2009 : The Fam returned to New England for some good ol' summer time fun this past month. Liana, Teague & Marley spent a full 3 weeks with time split between West Falmouth, Cape Cod and Lake Wentworth, New Hampshire. Marley at 2.5 yrs & Teague at just shy of 6 mo's.

Flower Girl! (Gina's wedding) : Gina, Liana's friend from residency, got married this weekend to Ryan. G&R asked Marley to be the flower girl. We currently have two books about being a flower girl we no longer need if anyone wants to borrow them (neither are very good). Things went off without a hitch, in fact, Marley did a great job. August in Boston '08 : Liana, Marley and Zoey escaped the SF fog to hang w/ our people in Boston for a week. The trip included a haircut, a sojourn to Cape Cod and some time in New Hampshire. West Point Inn : To celebrate the long weekend we decided to spend a night at the West Point Inn, a lodge nestled on the old railroad tracks at the top of Mt. Tamalpais in Marin. The inn has running water, gas powered lights and stove until 10 pm, and can only be accessed by foot/horse/mountain bike via a 2 mile trip (or longer if you're in that kind of mood). There's a fire road that'll get you there and is just "perfect" for an industrious stroller and pig headed family.

Wee little Album (growing) : As the expression among residents and fellows goes, "they can always hurt you more," but we've made it through that fussy 4-8 week period with Teague while Liana labored day and night basically as a single parent and Jamie took a whoppin' in the hospital. S. Douglas Memorial Set : I know this second child who's pretty convinced that second children in general don't get as much attention. He also felt pretty strongly that there was no way I was going to be able to take enough pictures of Teague to put him on par w/ Marley. So this album, despite my total body fatigue, was put together slap-dash late at night before a call weekend, for you, Mr. SecondChild. Marley at 25 months and Teague at 1.5-3 weeks old.

T+ 7 and Counting. : We've been keeping active this last week - Teague is doing the new-baby-reverse-schedule-I'm-only-awake-at-night thing, Marley's been active as ever, and Sammy got hit by a car. Thankfully, Sammy will be Ok but couldn't walk for a handful of days (Teague carried up and down the stairs - nice to have a boy around) & required daily vet visits. We negotiated not to give up one of our kids in vet visit fees but only just barely. Teague between 3 and 7 days old; Marley 2+ years.

Indian Summer : Last weekend the weather was especially nice - this is weird even by San Francisco standards. Sammy : Marley has a new best friend. Zoey's moved to her retirement home outside Boston and it didn't take long for Liana to cave to the incessant pressures to "dog pat" (by which Marley would succinctly suggest we leave the house, search for dogs, and once cornered, force them to enjoy her patting). Last week Liana and Marley came home w/ a ~1.5 year old foster dog that quickly transitioned from lease to own after a weekend proving it's loving mettle with our attack daughter. Marley at 20 months.

Editor's Best Friend : They say an Editor's best friend is the wastebasket, which I try to take to heart, but with 10 fulls days of Marley-time on our recent vacation back east during what is clearly the cutest phase of Marley's life to date, this album was destined to be huge right from the start. Marley at 19 months in Boston and Cape Cod. I should also mention that part of the reason Marley is so cute right now is that she's just started trying to repeat damn near every word she hears, so leave your cuss words at the door but if you do stop by and happen to wonder what a dop-doo is, well, it's a diaper of course.

(Not So) Clearlake : The founders of Clear Lake, in northern California, had a great sense of irony. We didn't intend to revel in their irony but unwittingly did this past labor day wknd. We rented a house on the lake with a couple other families and had a great time but Clear Lake itself has a pea-soup like quality this time of year when the algae blooms. You wont' see any swimming pictures here. Visibility in Clear Lake: 3 inches give or take. Nevertheless, it was nice to get out of the city. Marley just shy on 19 months.

MF - Oh My! : This past weekend, I mortgaged a hefty portion of my piggybank, not to mention my wife's love and affection, to purchase what is known in the photo world as a digital back. The digital back in question - both old and purchased from a man who may well have worked for the Bulgarian Mafia - isn't the greatest piece of equipment ever invented, but it's probably close. It functions to turn my analog Hasselblad into a digital wunderkin (which, in truth is sort of like saying a 60 year old can be the best snowboarder with the right board). The first 4 images below are scanned from negatives and the remainder are my first feeble attempts at making the new camera system work.

Yosemite : Liana, Marley, Holly & Loren, and I went to Yosemite this weekend to play in the wild wild west. And true to form we shot anything that moved (with a camera). It was also my first go at landscape photography, which, it turns out, is also really fun. The first day we were there was the photogenic equivalent of a 3 foot powder day on the slopes and I'm not even sure I fully appreciated it. That said, these are the pics from only one of the two cameras I brought. The Haselblad pics are analog (and harder but more fun). We'll see how those turn out. More to follow I suppose... Mars at 1 week short of a year. (Feb 2, 2008)

That Bad : In the last few days, as Liana and I have been looking into photo Christmas cards, it has come to my attention that we have no cute pictures of Marley. Last week we passed the 10,000 picture mark on our new camera (which we bought in the fall of 2006 - Marley's first picture was # 1073). You have to be pretty lousy at this game to take 9K pictures, 90% of which are of your child, and not end up with any cute ones... You won't see any of these on a Christmas card in the upcoming weeks. Marley at nine and three quarters months old hamming it up in the living room. Just a normal 15 minutes in the crazy frenetic world of our little munchkin.

Medium Format : Medium Format cameras are sort of like me: old, slow (to use), backwards (the mirrored viewfinder), boxy, and of limited use in most scenarios. That said, at least the cameras are also completely bad ass. A Brave New World : In a nod to self-restraint, the family had left smugmug behind for a sold 2 weeks to take on bigger tasks. But restraint has its limits and progress marches on: in the past 8 hours, I've completed an 8 hour exam, had a lovely celebratory dinner with the fam, and got back in the picture posting groove. More impressively, since we last updated, Mars is eating any semisolid food she can find (with heavy emphasis on sweet potatoes), sitting up like a champ, and discovering all that a San Francisco winter - I mean summer, has to offer.
